What To Do When The Heat’s Out

When you live in British Columbia, you are no stranger to cold mornings. There’s nothing worse then waking up to no heat and not the having time to investigate why before work.

You’re cold, in a rush, and begin to panic. You begin searching for furnace repair companies online to try and get your broken furnace fixed as soon as possible. If you live in an older home, chances are that you’ve experienced the cold-morning scramble more than once.

FORTUNATELY, THERE MAY BE AN EASIER SOLUTION.

Listed below are the two most common reasons why your heat may not be working. If you’ve got a few minutes, try troubleshooting your furnace to see if you are able to resolve the problem yourself. If not, our furnace technicians are ready to get your home heated again!

THE TWO MOST LIKELY REASONS YOUR FURNACE IS OUT

There may be many reasons why your furnace is out, but not all of them require a heating company (like us) to fix them. Many of the calls we receive regarding furnace repairs are for reasons that can be fixed by the homeowner.

When your furnace is out, it is likely because of two reasons: first, you may be experiencing a malfunction with your thermostat. Secondly, the pilot light for your furnace may be out. Both of these problems can result in your furnace blowing cold air.

IS YOUR THERMOSTAT SET TO ON?

Your thermostat is the first place a heating technician would look, and so should you. It seems like a no-brainer, but your thermostat is likely the problem. Before calling us, check your thermostat to ensure that it is in heat mode. It seems simple, but programmable thermostats are complex and can be very confusing.

In some instances the thermostat is not malfunctioning, but is actually out of power. Improperly programmed thermostats are most likely caused by a power outage (even a short one) with a dead battery. It is likely the thermostat has dumped its settings in the event of a power outage with a low/dead, battery. Replace the batteries in your thermostat before troubleshooting more complex problems.

IS YOUR PILOT LIGHT OUT?

A gas furnace blowing cold air can be a symptom of a pilot light that has gone out. The pilot light is responsible for your furnaces ignition control. Locate your burner assembly and check to see if there is a flame. If not, you must relight the furnace pilot light for the furnace to heat air.

To relight the furnace pilot light start by turning the power off. Near the burner assembly, turn the gas valve switch to “off”. Wait a few minutes to allow the remaining gas to clear away from the area. Using a barbecue lighter, hold a flame over the assembly while turning the valve to “pilot”. Press down for 30 seconds, and slowly release. The flame should stay lit. If not, you may need to contact one of our experts for help as the problem may be more severe than the pilot light.
