5 Signs That you Need to Fix a Clogged Drain and What to do About it?

Clogged Drain

Fixing a clogged drain is always a pain, but it’s better than dealing with the consequences if you let it get too far. So how do you know you need to look into fixing a clogged drain? There are several signs that may indicate blocked pipes well before a complete obstruction. Here’s a look at 5 signs you should be looking out for, and what you should do if you do notice any of them with your own drains.

1. Bad Odors

Bad smells can come from a few different causes. Organic material that has become stuck in your drainage system can begin to decompose over time, or a P-trap might be empty allowing sewage gas to come back up the drain.

If you notice a foul smell, check your drains to see where it’s coming from. Once you’ve located the drain, try running water through the system for a few minutes. If this is an infrequently used sink this might fix the problem by filling the P-trap, if this doesn’t solve the problem you may have to go under your sink and empty the P-trap as it can become filled with debris causing the smell. Should the problem persist, call your local plumber for assistance.

2. Slow Drains

A slow drain is caused by a partial blockage, the key is determining where the blockage is, and finding the best way to eliminate it. The first step is to check the drain stopper, the raised metal device that plugs your sink drain. These have a piece that extends into the drain which can become clogged with gunk that may need to be removed. If the clog is caused by grease or soap residue try pouring a half cup of baking soda into the drain, followed by a half cup of vinegar, and plug the sink with a rag. Wait a few minutes, then pour a gallon of boiling water down the drain to clear it out. And lastly, you can clean the P-trap to remove any blockages that may be there.

3. Water comes out of different drains

If you’re running the wash and notice your bathtub filling with washing machine water you have a clogged drain beyond where these pipes meet, causing the water to “drain” into the other pipe. Unless you’re familiar with plumbing it’s best to call a professional. A plumber has the tools, knowledge and expertise to eliminate an issue like this quickly and without hassle.

4. Gurgling Noise

Noises from your drains are not normal and are likely caused by an air flow problem. If you notice your toilet or other drains gurgling when you flush or run water, there is an issue with water displacing air in your system. Check the air vent on your roof, which may be clogged with debris. You can also tape the drains in your house shut so they’re air tight and plunge your toilet to move the obstruction. If you still notice gurgling call your plumber to fix the problem once and for all.

5. Multiple Clogged Drains

If you notice that many or all of the drains in your home appear clogged, you have a real issue. Call a plumber immediately to fix this one, because the main sewer may be experiencing a blockage, which is no good for your home.
